America by the numbers, courtesy of Chris Jordan

Via the always astute Andrew Revkin over at Dot Earth, I bring you a new TED talk from artist Chris Jordan.  Jordan is a visual artist who manipulates individual objects to produce massive photos that illustrate the data of our times.  His goal is to bring statistics to life, and explore the environmental footprints of the daily decisions we make as consumers.

From the horses mouth:

That’s what I’m trying to do with my work.  To take these numbers, theses statisitics, from the raw language of data and to transfer them into a more universal, visual language that can be felt.  Because my belief is if we can feel these issue, if we can feel these things more deeply, then they’ll matter to us.

The result is a million plastic cups manipulated to look like an information highway.  Or 32,000 barbie dolls, manipulated to look like a single set of female breasts. The work is breathtaking, the message, powerful.

A picture says a thousand word.  Watch this, for a thousand words and a thousand images that will simply blow your mind.
