If you’re a regular reader, you probably noticed my lack of commentary on Copenhagen last month. It used to be I had plenty to say on climate policy, especially when it came to reparation payments and north-south divides. But something about Copenhagen left a bad taste in my mouth. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I can tell you I find climate protesters obnoxious, climate commentators ill informed, and the general idea that we can commodify CO2 like everything else on this earth down right offensive. It bothered me that the outcome of the conference had been written far before the delegates stepped on Danish soil. I tired quickly of the media hype. Perhaps most importantly, the whole thing made me feel helpless. And I hate that. I like to be the driver of my own destiny.
Maybe I don’t want to write about policy anymore.
I’m still interested in earth science, earth issues, and people. I’m interested in historical inequalities and colonial legacies. But I’m interested in telling stories. Original stories. So as one of my many resolutions for 2010, I resolve to make earthfeed less of an aggregation of things you probably already know, and more of a place for original ideas and stories from our tiny blue planet. I’m inviting you to engage more with your own ideas and comments. I’m hopeful this can become a sounding board for debates and solutions and creative energy.
Goodbye 2009. Hello 2010. Fresh starts all around.
